Prof. Broadhead, Director of the Communications Across the Curriculum program, suggests a number of adjustments to the CAC requirements.

It is moved and seconded that

Students who have earned at least a C grade in a first-year or advanced writing course at an accredited university in the USA will be considered to have met the Basic Writing Proficiency requirement.

The motion passes (16-0-0).

It is moved and seconded that

Students who have received credit for a first-year writing course through the Advanced Placement Program will be considered to have met the Basic Writing Proficiency requirement.

The motion passes (13-0-0).

Prof. Broadhead also suggests the following adjustments to the CAC requirements.   The USC discussed these suggestions without action.  The USC will give further consideration to these adjustments at the November meeting.

Full-time students who do not submit a Writing Portfolio or Diagnostic Essay by the end of the Orientation Week in their first semester at must enroll in and complete the course during their first academic year.

Students who dispute the assessment of their Diagnostic Essay may appeal to the Associate Dean of the Undergraduate College.  Upon request from the Associate Dean, the CAC director will review the studentís records to affirm that the results were not mis-reported.  The Associate Dean will then consult with the studentís advisor before (a) exempting the student from COM 101/111 or (b) enforcing the Basic Writing Proficiency requirement in light of the CAC staffís original recommendation.

The CAC director will form and periodically consult with two advisory boards: (1) a faculty advisory board (with representation consistent with that of the Undergraduate Studies Committee) and (2) a professional advisory board (with representation from area and national employers, professional groups, and alumni).  Both boards will meet at least once a year to review the CASC program and make recommendations to the director.  The faculty advisory boards will also assist the director in the periodic review of relevant courses (ITPs, C-Course, and IPROs) to insure their consistency with CAC goals and policies.  Based on this review, the CAC director will make recommendation to the USG regarding the C-course designation for specific classes.
