The UGSC approves the minutes of the meeting of Oct 11, 2007 by unanimous consent.

By unanimous consent, the UGSC approves 10/11/07 motion to change the name of the BS ³Specialization in Computer Information Systems² to a BS in ³Computer Information Systems.²

The UGSC reviewed revisions to the 10/11/07 proposal for modifications to the BS Specialization in Political Science. The UGSC asks for a change in wording to make it clear that the proposal does not cross-list of courses from separate units. With that revised wording, the UGSC approves by unanimous consent the modifications that: change the name to BS in ³Political Science,² renumber several courses, specify a list core courses, and define of specializations within the degree.

On behalf of the committee (established 10/11/07) to review the use of the terms ³specialization² and ³concentration² in IIT curricula, Dr. Pulliam moves:

the term "concentration" to refer to tacks within degree programs be eliminated across all disciplines, and replaced with the term "specialization."

In keeping with IIT policy, a vote on the motion is postponed to the next meeting of the UGSC

On behalf of the committee (established 10/11/07) to review IIT rules for concurrent degrees, Dr. Pulliam presents the UGSC with alternative proposed revisions to present policy:

(a) the dual-degree requirement for a minimum of 15 hours of course work above and beyond the first degree be eliminated;

(b) students in degree programs with sufficient free electives and minor coursework to allow a second major, without satisfying IIT's 15-additional-hour requirement for dual degrees, be allowed to earn a second major within a single degree.

The UGSC will continue discussion of the options at its next meeting.

Dr. Mitchell presented details of the Kedge program for academically at-risk undergraduates. Dr. Mitchell asks the UGSC to endorse HSS general education credit for Psyc-227: ³Educational Strategies.² Since the course is required in and restricted to students in the Kedge program, general education credit for this course is inconsistent with traditional IIT treatment of HSS general education credit. In keeping with IIT policy, a vote on the general education status of Psyc-227 is postponed to the next meeting of the UGSC.

On behalf of the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Williams proposes modifications to the BS in Aerospace Engineering. In keeping with UGSC policy, a vote on the proposal is postponed to the next UGSC meeting.

Dr. Snapper informs the UGSC that the University Faculty Council has expressed concerns over the forthcoming transition from SIS to Banner. The UFC will discuss their concerns with the Banner team.
