It is moved and seconded on 11/09/10 that

The UGSC endorses the creation of a degree in Engineering Physics, with the curriculum presented by BCPS.

The motion passes 14-0.

It is moved and seconded on 11/09/10 that

The UGSC endorses the creation of a degree in Biology with a Secondary Education Teaching Certificate, with the curriculum presented by BCPS.

The motion passes 14-0.

It is noted that the final semester of the degrees with secondary teaching certificates proposed by BCPS specify only 6 credits MSED-450 in the final semester, which is below the minimum for full-time enrollment. It is noted that since MSED-450 demands full-day, five-day secondary teaching activities, students cannot take regular IIT courses in that semester. It is noted that students may take MSED 497 for additional hours, if needed. The registrar notes that with the permission of the UGSC, the registrar could designate 6 credits of MSED 450 as full-time enrollment, which will resolve most (though perhaps not all) of the issues.

The chair reminds the UGSC that it is UGSC practice to authorize subcommittees to approve new courses for general education, and then report back to the UGSC on those new courses. The subcommittees are established. Humanities: Pulliam/Trygstad. Social and Behavioral Sciences: Ellington/Hosman. CS: Bauer/Trygstad. Math: Fasshauer/Snyder. Natural Science: Spink/Kamper.

M. Bauer draws attention to the problems discussed on 9/14/10 that have arisen from recent prerequisite restrictions that have been added to courses that satisfy the social science general education requirement. It is moved and seconded that

The general education requirement statement be revised to: Social and Behavioral Sciences: a minimum of nine credit hours. Courses that satisfy this requirement are marked with an (S) in this bulletin. The courses must be distributed as follows: Courses from at least two different fields.

On UGSC policy, a vote on the motion is postponed to the next meeting of the UGSC.

G. Fasshauer reports to the UGSC on modifications to the course requirement for the specialization in secondary education within the BS in Applied Mathematics. The UGSC views this matter as an information item that does not require a formal vote.
