The Chair notes that the UGSC has a quorum for business.

 

The minutes of the meetings of 1/27/05 are approved.

 

The Chair informs the UGSC that the Faculty Council has received both (a) notification of the UGSC endorsement of the joint program with the Illinois College of Optometry and (b) documentation of the UGSC endorsement of the proposed reduction in the IPRO general education requirement. These matters will be studied at the next FC meeting.

 

It is moved and seconded that the UGSC endorses the proposed BS in Journalism of Technology, Science and Business.

The motion passes (16/0).

 

The UGSC continues consideration of the motion from 1/27/05 that the three categories of graduation with honors be set at

summa cum laude = GPA ¬„ 3.90

magna cum laude = GPA ¬„ 3.80

cum laude = GPA ¬„ 3.50

Prof. Saletta presents the UGSC with a statistical study of the number of students graduating at various GPA levels, broken down by major.

On behalf of the Student Government Association, Mr. Dronamraju informs the UGSC that the SGA is preparing a position statement on the motion, which it expects to have ready before the next meeting of the UGSC.

It is moved and seconded that the UGSC postpone a vote on the motion, in order to give the SGA time to prepare its position statement.

The motion to postpone passes (9-3).

 

It is moved and seconded that:

The change in the definition of graduation with honors will be implemented at a January graduation ceremony.

The motion is amended that:

If revisions to the definition of graduation with honors are approved in the present semester, then the change in definition will be implemented at the January 2006 graduation ceremony.

It is moved and seconded that the UGSC postpone a vote on the motion until next meeting, in order to give the SGA time to prepare its position statement on the motion.

The motion to postpone passes (9-3).
