1. The minutes of the 1/22/01 were distributed and approved.

2. Prof O'Leary distributed, read, and commented on Resolution #1 (appended). After some discussion, Dean Myerson directed the members to discuss the resolution with their department and bring their position to the next UGSC meeting. Prof. Voland asked if he could give a 5 minute presentation at the next meeting. Myerson agreed and suggested that a handout might be appropriate.

3. Prof O'Leary distributed, read, and commented on Resolution #2 (appended). After a limited discussion, Dean Myerson asked Profs. Saletta and Sitton to give a brief overview of the problem. He indicated that impact of Resolution #1 could be very significant, especially the impact on preparation for the next ABET visit, and that he suggests that the majority of the next meeting be devoted to a discussion of Resolution #1.

Resolution #1

Whereas, On April 14, 1996 the Main Campus Faculty adopted a motion modifying the undergraduate general education requirements to include a minimum of six credit hours of IPRO type courses for all undergraduate students; and

Whereas, At the adoption of this motion members of the Main Campus Faculty expressed concerns with regard to increased academic costs associated with an IPRO type pedagogy; and

Whereas, The university administration assured the members of the Main Campus Faculty that sufficient resources would be found so as to appropriately support these courses; and

Whereas, As of this date colleges, institutes and departments have received little or no support for the offering of these courses; and

Whereas, As of this date no monetary plan has been established to support faculty involvement in these courses; and

Whereas, The administration is presently recommending decreases in the total number of credit hours for undergraduate engineering curricula as well as reductions in budgets for part-time faculty; therefore

Resolved, That the undergraduate general education requirement of a minimum of six credit hours of IPRO type courses be immediately suspended.

Resolution #2

Whereas, In the fall semester of 1996 the undergraduate schedule of courses was modified placing IPRO type courses on Friday afternoons and blocking Friday afternoon time slots from all other undergraduate courses; and

Whereas, This change effectively resulted in a compressed four day work week for undergraduate students; and

Whereas, In view of this problem the undergraduate schedule of courses was again changed in the fall semester of 2000 to block out seventy-five minute periods on both Tuesday and Thursday to accommodate IPRO type courses; and

Whereas, The blocking out of any time slot places severe constraints on colleges, institutes, and departments in scheduling their course offerings; therefore

Resolved, That the blocking out of scheduled time slots for IPRO type courses be immediately discontinued.
