The UGSC considers the motion of Dec 8 that

A student declaring a minor needs approval from the unit offering the minor.

The Motion fails (1,10)

Dr. Snapper informs the UGSC that the University Faculty Council is reviewing the UGSC assessments that motions passed by the UGSC in the Fall semester are not significant and do not require further University Faculty Council review and vote.

On behalf of MMAE, Dr. Ruiz asks the UGSC to endorse modifications to the BS in Material Science Engineering program, analogous to the changes approved for the BS in Mechanical Engineering. The changes are posted at the UGSC web site. The changes will reduce the required credits from 128 to 126 credit hours. On UGSC policy a vote is deferred until the next meeting of the UGSC.

Prof. Pulliam informs the UGSC that the Calendar Committee has stated that it does not have the authority to modify the drop/add date in the academic calendar mandated by the provost. It is moved and seconded that:

-- Whereas primary responsibility for the educational enterprise rests with the faculty, and

-- Whereas allowing students to enter a course after 2 ‡ weeks of classes is counterproductive,

-- Be it resolved that

The Faculty Council with the review of the Graduate Studies Committee return the open add period to no more than ten calendar days after the first day of the semester.

The motion passes (13/0)

Greg Welter suggests revisions in wording in the Bulletin to the statement of the General Education Requirements, in order to clarify the requirements:

A reference to ́200-level foreign language coursesî will be revised to read ́intermediate and advanced foreign language courses.î A reference to a ́Humanities 100-level courseî will be revised to read ́HUM 102, 104, or 106.î

The UGSC accepts the revisions as an information item, without vote.

On behalf of the Institute of Psychology, Dr. Ellington presents revisions to the Minor in Human Resources. As revised, the minor requires <Psych 221 – Human Learning and Behavior, Psych-301 – Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Psych-310 – Social Psychology, Pscy-409 – Psychological Testing, Psyc-455 – Training and Development, Pscy-481 – Leadership>. The UGSC accepts the revisions as an information item, without vote.
