Meeting chaired by Ray Trygstad.

Minutes recorded by Rebecca Steffenson.

1.  Minutes [Trygstad]

Minutes from 9/13/16 were approved unanimously.

2.  Welcome new members [Trygstad]

New members were introduced to the UGSC committee. They include Tony Pan (CAEE), Seok-Hoon Hong (CHBE), Richard Guan (CHEM), Jeremy Hajek (ITM), Akash Raina (SGA), and C. Hood (CS).

3.  Revised BS in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics, MBB degree [Menhart] http://www.iit.edu/~ugsc/documents/MBB%20revision%202016%20final.pdf

The MBB degree program has been revised. Some core courses were removed and added to the electives, and new electives were added. This is an informational item, because the credit hours remain the same. The revisions are all BIO courses and the prerequisites are covered by the core.

4.  Leadership Minor [Miller]

Some concerns about the new leadership in minor curriculum are summarized here:  a) Army ROTC courses are listed but Navy and Air Force courses are not, b) Many of the listed social science courses are not regularly offered, c) Not all of the HUM 380 topics are appropriate, d) There should be a restriction on students taking both ITMM 470 and ITMM 471 e) The long list of electives might confuse students.

This is an informational item, but the UGSC recommends that an advisor be appointed for the minor, and that elective courses be listed as subject to advisor approval in the bulletin.

5. Core Curriculum Assessment Committee Survey [Pulliam] Members of the Core Curriculum Assessment Committee are Greg Pulliam, Becky Steffenson, and Carol Emmons.

This UGSC subcommittee will be working with the Center for Research and Service to survey students in order to assess whether the learning goals of the Core Curriculum are being met.  The courses will be selected based on the sample of students likely to be found in each course. The goal is to access the most students in the fewest number of courses. Please tell your department Chair and the other faculty in your department and encourage them to cooperate if one of their courses is selected for the survey. The launch is currently scheduled for November 14th.

6. New Business

A. Raina (SGA) noted that some students were unable to attend the Career Fair because of quizzes/exams in courses. UGSC members are asked to help raise faculty awareness in their departments for the next Career Fair date (February 23rd).
